NOTE: THIS CONTEST IS LONG GONE.

Exciting things are happening here at the Traveler’s Library.

1. Robert Todd Felton, author of several R.T.Feltonexcellent books which have been discussed here, will be guest writer at A Traveler’s Library next week.  He will be talking about the importance of literature for the traveler and about his book A Journey to Transcendentalist New England.

2.  Mr. Felton has agreed to offer a copy of his book, Walking Boston as the prize in a contest here at A Traveler’s Library. Somewhere in the fine print explaining this blog, I explain that I will not talk about guidebooks. Usually. I will make an exception for literate guidebooks that are particularly concerned with culture and the arts. Walking Boston, qualifies as a particularly literate and fulfilling guidebook.

3.  You have a chance to win any time between now and March 2.  Just post a question in the comment section of this post, or in the comment section of one of Mr. Felton’s two posts next week.

What would you like to know about New England? Do you have other questions for the author? The winner will be selected by a random drawing of comments posted between February 17 and March 2.

THE PRIZE: “Walking Boston”, by Robert Tod Felton

I love the walking tours, but curious, did you find any new treasures of places that were really never put out there for the public and whats your advice for a walking tour with kids?

    more about historic folklore

  4. M. Rogers says:

Could you supply the names of some of your favorite restaurants in Boston that feature classic Boston fare? What’s special about them?

  5. Andy Kennedy says:

Would this qualify also as a “rolling” tour of Boston? If so I’d love to be entered, we don’t have much on accessibility in Boston in our network.
Appreciate your thoughts on how Boston rates.
    Obliged!

  6. Mary Lebeau says:

My question: what would be the best walking tour if your party includes a 12 and a 6 year old? We love Boston but sometimes all the walking gets hard on the kids.

    Thanks,
    Mary

  7. Ronni Fox says:

Would love to win this as I am in the planning stages of my first trip to Boston.

  8. shannon Baas says:

    I would love this.

  9. Looks like a great book! Please enter me in the contest. My question about Boston: if I was looking to do a house swap or rent a short-term holiday apartment in Boston, what neighborhoods would you suggest? Ideally, I like a safe area that is relatively close to major attractions (on foot or via public transit) but that is largely residential, rather than a business or tourist district. Thanks!

  10. Brian N. says:

Great healthy way to see a city – is there a green section as well to the book?

  11. Pat says:

Please tell me the best way to tour Harvard University.

With a city this old, is the population holding steady?

I went to school in Boston, I would love to win this.

  14. Lisa Sliwa says:

I most often travel by myself, and I love to wander a city and get in touch with the heart and soul of it. . . is there anything in particular that a single traveler with the luxury of all the time in the world should focus on that those traveling in a group might be inclined to pass by?

  15. Teresa Garner says:

I am a museum lover. What museum is your favorite and why? Also I am taking my 14 year old son with me this summer and he is a die hard history buff, where should I take him first? I have never been to Boston before and I am very excited about my trip. Thanks.

  16. Ellen Lopes says:

My husband is from Fall River, MA and he wants to take me to MA to see his home state. What time of year is the best to visit Boston and surrounding areas.

  18. mindy says:

I would love to win this book – what is the yummiest food in New England? I know clam chowder is popular, or lobster with butter sauce, but is there anything else that is just as yummy but not as well-known?

  20. CHARLES KASSING says:

    thanks

  24. Jason says:

My question is “What does it feel like to be a sports fan in New England?” Every team wins (except the Bruins). It must be magical. We loose everything all the time in MN

  25. liz carlin says:

    It’s such a confusing city.

To everyone, first off my apologies on not responding sooner. I had checked earlier and there were no comments and now there are plenty. I will try to answer them the best I can.

    Thanks,

    Robert Todd Felton

  32. Todd Felton says:

    Angela J,

The great thing about Boston is that you can put together short walks of under a mile and see a tremendous amount, or head out on a 6 mile walk with plenty of variety. While each of the walks in the book is designed to be a separate walk, you can easily string together a few of them for a nice long walk.

    Robert Todd Felton

  33. Todd Felton says:

    Jason -

I grew up in San Francisco and while I do root for the Red Sox, my heart lies with the Oakland A’s and the 49′rs. However, my real passion is for soccer and we’ve got the most successful team in Major League Soccer to never win the cup — the New England Revolution.

  34. Todd Felton says:

To those that are confused (and rightfully so) by the myriad of crooked streets and alleyways that make up Boston, I agree wholeheartedly! I talk about the origins of why the streets are so confusing in the introduction to my book and also discuss how to get around with minimal confusion (secret tip — head for the water).

    Todd

  35. Todd Felton says:

    Teresa -

There are so many options for great museums, depending on your wants. For modern art, the Institute of Contemporary Art, for science, the Museum of Science, classic art, the Museum of Fine Arts. There is an especial abundance of historical sites: Bunker Hill, the US Constitution, Fanueill Hall, Paul Revere’s House. But actually, one of my favorites is the Boston Athenaeum. I talk about it in my other book, A Journey into the Transcendentalists’ New England and tell the great story of how Nathaniel Hawthorne ran into a ghost while reading in the basement.

  36. Todd Felton says:

    Lisa S.,

When I am travelling alone (which is often as a travel writer), I also love to wander a city in search of the spots that are perhaps are outside the main areas but really speak to the experience of being in that city.

For me, there are two places in Boston that jump to mind. The first is actually not in Boston, but Cambridge. Boston is very much a city of colleges and universities and there is so much happening in and around the campuses, not just Harvard and MIT, but also BU, BC and the myriad of schools that it is worth noticing.

The second place, I’m just going to tease you and ask you to read the response I write to Sandy for the answer.

  37. Todd Felton says:

    Pat -

There is a tour of Harvard in this book.

  38. Todd Felton says:

    Brian –

Boston was just rated as one of the best green cities, primarily because lots of people walk and take public transportation. I’m hoping the entire book will be thought of as “green.”

  39. Todd Felton says:

    Laura -

Some areas to consider are (in no particular order other than I think of them): Beacon Hill, Jamaica Plain, Newton, Bay Village, Back Bay, and the North End. I would also suggest considering any of the new, green condos going up in South Boston. There are a variety of prices for each. Try searching Otalo.com for the best options.

  40. Todd Felton says:

Sandy – there were lots of places that were surprises for me while doing this book (as I mentioned earlier, I grew up in San Francisco), but my favorite find is Bay Village. You don’t hear much about it, but it is just two blocks off the Public Garden. It is a wonderful small neighborhood with lovely architecture, a fascinating history, and a great vibe to it.

Good luck to all. Great questions. Thanks for all the interest in the book and Boston.
