Destination: Washington D.C.
Book: The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown
This note is a perfect example of why I prefer to call my articles here “discussions” rather than “reviews.” I have not read Dan Brown‘s newest book, yet. However, when I heard that the Smithsonian site was listing free museum day around the country tomorrow, here, September 26, I just had to point you toward Dan Brown’s, The Lost Symbol .
So tomorrow go to a museum near you for free, and then when you can, go to Washington D.C. to see the sites there.
You see, Dan Brown hung out a lot in Washington D.C. museums in the writing of this book. And Washington D.C. tourism office wants to help you tour the sites in the book. Just go to their website. You’ll get a tour to find all the Lost Symbol(s) , including those hidden at the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, Mt. Vernon, Botanic Garden, and OF COURSE–The Spy Museum, and other sites.
Related Posts: Many people used Dan Brown’s previous books as guides to sites in Rome and I talked about the movie Angels and Demons here. For another thriller guide to Washington D.C., I recommended a series by David Baldacci. Doesn’t anybody set romances in D.C. ?I’m sure there are plenty of historic novels, not to mention comedies.
If you like this post, please pass it on by clicking on the buttons below or giving it a Tweet, but remember, the Free Museum Day is one day only, September 26, 2009. But the Washington D.C. sites will be waiting for you any time.

I grew up in DC, so the idea of visiting the sites in Dan Brown’s new book seems like a strange way of getting its flavor to me, but hey, kudos to the Tourism Office for its quick response to this new bestseller!

Alexandra: That’s kind of what I thought, too, although for those of us who have already combed the sites, it would be interesting to look at them with this new viewpoint. And I agree–kudos to the tourism office!
Hi,
I haven’t read Dan Brown’s new book but from what I’ve heard it’s not terribly accurate. At least according to this Slate article:
http://www.slate.com/id/2228587/.
I think people in DC are generally not thrilled with his book but so it goes.
I’m trying to think of any non-political thrillers set in DC but failing. I have an anthology of DC Noir edited by George Pelicanos which is kind of cool.

Stephanie: Thanks for the link to the Slate Article. Very interesting, particularly in light of Brown’s interview on the Today show in which he talks about how careful he is to be accurate! Of course it IS fiction, after all. And if it does for D.C. tourism what it did for Florence and Rome–Look out.
