When I first saw this beautiful travel book full of photographs, I assumed that it was about festivals and events. Yes, it has those, but it is actually much more. Arranged by month, the book lists five places under each category: Festivals and Culture, Unforgettable Journeys, Natural Wonders, Luxury and Romance, Active Adventures and Family Getaways. These divisions are rather arbitrary, however it gives you a chance to learn somethings about a lot of places.
Additionally, some of the places in each list are featured in gorgeous two-page spreads. (The others have links provided so you can do your own research.)
Naturally I was pleased to see my home town of Tucson featured, and the book has a nice description of high points. However, it was categorized under luxury so they came up with a very high per day cost. Trust me, you can get along for lots less, and have a much more activity oriented stay in Tucson, as well as the luxurious vacations. For each featured place the book lists a few hotels and five days of activities that follow the theme they have suggested.
A good index comes in handy for those who plan by place rather than by month of trip. Everyone will have their quibbles with the choices here. For instance, much as I love the Cajun culture, I am amazed that Lafayette Louisiana was selected rather than New Orleans. But the best thing of all about the book may be the terrific atlas in the back. Maps of about 1″ to 600 km. provide a wonderful trip planning guide.

I have picked up Joseph Rosendo’s (editor) “Where to Go When: The Americas” at the book store, and was intrigued by it. I am one of those people perpetually challenged by schedules, and it is good that someone has put together this kind of a travel planning guide. Thanks for the review!

What a great guide. I’m an awful travel planner and need all the help I can get. (and a sucker for picture books) Where to Go When: the Americas would be a nice prize. I always vacation on off season. I find that service and people are more relaxed and real that way.
Where to Go When: the Americas sounds like a fab read.

I’m adding Where to Go When to my list of books to read for armchair travel. For the read deal, I still go to Europe when I can afford a ticket to visit my kids and grandkids.
I love the DK/Eyewitness Guides for their beautiful pictures…very helpful when planning trips, but a little too heavy to actually take on the trip!

sounds like a great book! I lived in Tucson for three years – I’m surprised it listed the city as luxury, unless it was focused on Canyon Ranch, Hacienda del Sol type places?
It is too late for prize drawing, but I still want to say I love DK/Eyewitness Travel guides, because of all illustrations I can find in it. It some much helps in trip planning.
