Travel Photo Thursday: Witches

Wicked Marrionettes, Salzburg
Wicked Marrionettes, Salzburg

Although the Salzburg Marionette Theater is anything but scary, you’ll have to admit that the witch from  Hansel and Gretel is a little scary. I recently learned, however, that the way to keep witches away is to put a pile of corn near you doorway.  When a witch flies over corn, she is obliged to stop and count every kernel before she can go on.  And I never thought why I pile corn in a centerpiece for Halloween decor!

I visited the Salzburg Marionette Theater and was fortunate to be invited on a backstage tour when Ken and I toured Austria several years ago. If you thought marionettes were just for kids, you should take a look at the operas presented by this theater.

  1. So that’s the purpose of corns. I’ll be sure to put a lot to give the witch a hard time counting. I am curious on what the puppet which will look like in action. Great photo of the theater and the place looks so mysterious.

    1. Let us know if you get the photo! There probably is some superstition about photographing witches, too. And WOW! Those cinnamon rolls in your featured article are haunting me now!

  2. Loved the picture of the witches! I was in Salzburg this summer and attended an opera at the Marionette Theater. They are spectacular. I had no idea they would be so big and detailed. It was very enjoyable.

    1. I envy you attending one of their operas, Debbie. The theater was dark while we were in town, so I was happy just to get the backstage tour. Some day I may have to share my photos of the costume shop, etc. I never had realized that it takes SEVERAL marionettes to play each role. (Because of course they can’t do quick costume changes like humans!!)
