Last summer, my students and I read The Hobbit together. It had been 30 years since I’d read it. I have to admit, I reveled in the classic story, long buried in my brain under years of reading. As you know, it is a classic tale of a quest; a long, life-changing journey. The travelers have to battle (and avoid) various creatures, traverse extraordinarily vast plains, wend their way through mountain paths, and pursue their quest across Middle Earth. Travel Photo Thursday: A Foggy Day

I was inspired to post a few pictures of fog and mist by this lovely misty Ireland photo at Music Road, and a memory of a foggy day in Chicago (left).

It also is a challenge to myself, since I tend to leave my camera in its case when the weather turns misty.  I need to learn to experiment with the special effects that can be found on a rainy, foggy day. I wish I had more of these. My normal reaction is to wait until I can see shadows on the ground before snapping.

We have been blessed with good weather on our travels. Our only day on Macau was a rainy day, and we spent some of it searching for a shop that sold umbrellas, and finding expensive antique furniture, delicious Portugese food, postcards to make up for the lack of photo ops, and FINALLY umbrellas. We wound up ducking through puddles and wearing the throw-away raincoats during our three days in Florence, Italy with off-and-on rain. Consequently, we have very few pictures from that gorgeous city.

Oh, please, don’t ask me to choose.  It’s like picking your favorite child. It just isn’t done. Besides, think of the psychiatrist bills to battle the neurosis of those that are not chosen.

But Choose I must.  It seems there is this “thing” going around–not lethal but very infectious–and I have been intentionally exposed by my friend Mark over at Travel Wonders of the World.  Well, since Mark is a good friend (I’ve guest blogged for him about Bayeux  and Canyon de Chelly,  and he wrote about Mark Twain for me and leaves comments frequently here), I am honored.
