Chic Santorini

Island of Santorini, Vanilia Restaurant
Island of Santorini, Vanilia Restaurant

Just one shot today. This has always been one of my favorites. We walked from the town of Oia halfway along the caldera of Santorini toward Thera, the main town. We saw this restaurant, Vanilia, which, by the way is still there in Firostefani (NOTE 6/2013 I THINK they are still there, but their website is inaccessible today). Click on the link to see more enticing photos. (I just noticed that according to their website, they were brand new in 1997 when we were there!)

The decor was stylish, the cliffside view was stunning. I suppose the food was good, but surrounded by so much beauty the meal became secondary. Then this model-like beauty walked out the door.

This is my contribution to Travel Photo Thursday, sponsored by Nancie at Budget Travelers’ Sandbox.  Click that link to see photos from a couple dozen travel bloggers/writers from around the world. (You’ll also see Nancie’s own stunning shots of Burma.)

Travel Photos: 7 Greek Islands

As you set out for Ithaka
hope the voyage is a long one,
full of adventure, full of discovery.

From Ithaka by C.P. Cavafy (See the entire poem here)

I can’t help myself–I return to Greece again and again.  We thoroughly explored the Peloponnese and much of the mainland before we took to the sea.  Finally, we assembled six friends, rented a boat through a guy I had met on line and in person in Washington D.C.  (we met on a Prodigy travel board, to show you how long I’ve known the guy. Ever hear of Prodigy?). We headed for the Greek Islands.

We plotted  a cruise through several Cycladic islands (the circle of islands in the center of the Greek Mediterranean.)

A note to those who might want to follow in our wake–my friend Robert no longer owns this boat. And although there are other sailboats available in the Greek islands, sailing does not suit everyone. You might find Mediterranean cruises more to your liking with less spartan quarters and more help from crew.

Our boat, Annamaria “Our” boat, Annamaria in the Athens marina. Continue reading Travel Photos: 7 Greek Islands

Travel Photo Thursday: Animals

Cats got their own post–they’re snobbish that way, aren’t they? But here are some miscellaneous animals we have met along the way–not counting those behind bars or ditches in zoos or behind glass walls in Las Vegas.  Humans make very interesting subjects, but animals can have the advantage of being humorous just because they are in an unexpected place.  Remember the goat in the tree?  Besides, you don’t have to ask their permission to print their photo.
